MCS GREEN ROCKET BASKETBALL IS A FEW WEEKS AWAY OF STEPPING INTO THE MIKE ROBERTS ERA OF BEING THE VARSITY BASKETBALL COACH. COACH ROBERTS HAS COACHED VARSITY SOCCER, VARSITY BASEBALL & JV BASKETBALL. THE RECORDS HAVE BEEN ANYTHING BUT STELLAR SO THIS YEAR THEY HAVE APPOINTED HIM JV & VARSITY BASKETBALL COACH. I ASSUME THAT THIS HAS TAKEN PLACE BECAUSE NOBODY ELSE APPLIED FOR THE JV JOB. AFTER ALL THAT IS 4HRS OF PRACTICE A DAY AND AS WE KNOW SPREADING TIME THIN IS AN MCS SPECIALTY CARRIED ON FROM LAST YEARS COACHING DEBACLE. PLUS EACH TEAM COULD USE THE FULL ATTENTION OF EACH OTHERS RESPECTIVE COACH, BOTH BEING MIKE ROBERTS. THIS IS ALOT OF ADDED PRESSURE FOR ONE COACH. AFTER ALL WHO WILL BE IN THE LOCKER ROOM PREPARING THE VARSITY WITH THE JV GAME STILL GOING ON? WILL OUR VARSITY TEAM THATS WON 3 GAMES IN TWO YEARS BE THAT GOOD THAT IT CAN AFFORD EVEN THAT LACK OF ATTENTION. AFTER ALL SHOULDN'T EACH TEAM GET 100% OF THEIR COACH'S ATTENTION NOT 50%? NOT AT GOOD OLD MCS, WHERE THE ATHLETIC COUNCIL HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE HALL OF FAME. ITS JUST ONE MORE JOKE!

You gotta be kiddin' me !...They only won 3 games in 2 yrs ?...My first reaction was to laugh...that's..well, pitiful, to say the least...I feel sorry for the kids, they must be looked upon as a joke by all the other area schools...Way to go MCS, it's not only your sports teams that are laughed at, it's the people who run the school too...There is strength in numbers, I would think you parents, if you wanted better for your children, would band together to find a way to get Jeff into that school sports system, he at least cares enough about your kids to open his mouth, unlike the others who appear to be satisfied with the status quo...Gawd, get up off your butts and do something, people.

I have no idea who the boys or girls involved in the basketball programs are.  I'm simply going to address this issue strictly by numbers.  I'm guessing there are around 80 students in the high school (boys and girls).  That puts 20 in the graduating class (I think that might be high).  To make the math easy, let's say there are 40 boys in grades 9-12.  You have to choose your jv and varsity teams from a pool of these 40.  If you have 12 on each team, you are trying to find 24 basketball players out of 40 students.  Realistically, of the 40 boys (9-12), you might have 10 good athletes.  The pool of athletes is making it very difficult for Morristown to be competitive.  I don't care if you put BOBBY KNIGHT in charge of the program.  You can't fight a war without bullets.

I am not arguing that it is becoming more difficult to field teams in ALL schools these days, but for the record, this years senior and junior classes both have 31 students and the sophmore and freshman classes both have 28 students!!!  I believe the problem lies much deeper than the number of students in our highschool!!!!

All good points why a small school struggles to compete. I understand that having one coach is not the ideal situation, but back when Coach Holleran, Coach Conklin and even Coach Tehonica were running very successful programs, they ran all sports without asst coach's. During these tough budget times the alternative could be much worse. Not having programs would hurt our students in many more ways than having less time with the coach. Fortunately for many people who are of the age to take a real interest in all these programs, came thru at a time when the programs could be supported both financially and by the community. Lets hope we can get back to that for future generations.
